Session 5 — Sensors and Wait Until (Card Coding Lesson 3)
Opening concept: Sensors let programs react instead of just following a script.
Physical activity: PL-5 (Clap Sensor Game) — revisit briefly (2–3 minutes). This time emphasize: the student doesn’t move until a clap happens. They could wait forever. That’s “wait until” — the program is paused, not stopped. Then show the Card Coding “wait until clap” card.
Activity:
- Card Coding Lesson 3: drive forever + wait until clap
- Students build a program: Edison waits, then responds to a clap
- Game: Simon Says with Edison — the room gives claps, teams try to predict what their Edison will do
- Challenge: program a “stop light” — Edison drives until it hears a clap, stops, waits, drives again
Engineering connection: Input → Process → Output revisited now with student-written programs
Materials: Card Coding student cards, quiet-ish room for sound sensor sensitivity
